If you think Mikey’s City Grill is just another market stall that sells jerk, then you might want to change your mind once you know that founder and head chef Mike’s parents were one of the early and original group of people who ran the Notting Hill Carnival to sell their family proud recipe Caribbean jerk chicken.
“My parents never let me join the Carnival when I was a kid, there wasn’t a kids carnival back then and I would tell them every year when they left me for the Carnival, one day I will run my own stall and it will be the busiest one at your carnival!”
Mike never forgot about his childhood dream and later went to work for Nando’s and worked his way up in the company while also improving his knowledge and cooking technique to later open his own market stall.
“Few years ago, you don’t see Londoners talk much about street food, because it’s just some cheap eats that you get when you don’t have any other choices. Now street food is like a restaurant outdoors and also a festival must have element! Because street food will always stay relevant to the people, it’s more focused on what really makes eating out fun.”
“Although I’ve grown up in London, I noticed there was a lot of home cooked stereo type for Caribbean food and the people, but now jerk is an amazing dish for everyone who is ready for a good meal! And I want to make sure I am one of the stalls that is setting a good quality standard that truly represent Jerk dishes. We also use a special coal and spices straight from Caribbean and Trinidad, just so that our coal is safe for the environment as Caribbean really care about the environment and what they do to their community and surroundings.”
